The Nine: One hot summer night, in the car park of a suburban Sydney train station, nine respectable strangers stand over the body of a man they all hated. During Covid lockdown they'd all been members of the same 12-step recovery Zoom, where, just for fun, they'd plotted his murder. How is he now, very much IRL, dead?
The Kids: Three young, delinquent, quasi-celebrities find themselves on the wrong side of the law. A fallen sporting hero and TV star, busted for cocaine possession. Again. A handsome, champion boxer, turned outlaw biker gang member, locked up for GBH. And the daughter of a famed brain surgeon, booked for DUI. To avoid jail time, their lawyers leverage Section Ten, a little known law which sees them swapping jail time for a Byron Bay rehab.
London, 1980s: Jenny McLean and Jill Darling are living the domestic-goddess dream. They’re married to wealthy men, and have beautiful homes and children. There’s just one hitch—Jenny’s little boy, Freddy, isn’t grasping social concepts. But Jenny’s determined to love him into normality. When Freddy meets Jill’s sweetheart son, Hamish, there’s an instant rapport between the eleven-year-olds. Freddy is transformed. Jenny is convinced he’s fixed. Then Freddy does something so unimaginably horrific, the entire world is shocked.
Detective Sergeant, Clara Jane: DS CJ, is thirty-two, five-foot-four, has spicey red hair and is a homicide squad hot shot. She's also six months pregnant, single, clueless about babies and determined not to let her bosses bench her.
When DS CJ starts investigating The Nine, she becomes obsessed. Her dogged addiction to the truth will see her unpick the threads that bind them to The Kids, the McLeans, the Darlings and the dead man.
A thousand secrets, a dozen addictions, four decades, three bodies, two killers, one cop. You'd be Addicted too.
